Bertram Charles Binning was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta and grew up in Vancouver where he later attended art school before pursuing his studies in Oregon, Greenwich Village, New York and London. He joined the University of British Columbia School of Architecture in 1949 after many years as instructor at the Vancouver School of Arts.
